Dr. Adolfo García-Sastre is Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Medicine/Infectious Diseases and Director of the Global Health and Emerging Pathogens Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is also Principal Investigator for the Center for Research on Influenza Pathogenesis (CRIP), one of five NIAID Centers of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance (CEIRS). For the past 20 years, his research interest has been focused on the molecular biology of influenza viruses and several other negative strand RNA viruses. He has developed reverse genetics techniques for this group of viruses, and he is using these techniques for the development of novel live attenuated virus vaccines. He is a co-leader of the basic research component on Viral Therapeutics and Pathogenesis of the NIAID-funded North East Biodefense Center. He has been a member of the Vaccine Study Section and of the VirB Study Section of the NIH, and is editor in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, PLoS Pathogens and Journal of Virology. He is also on the editorial boards of Virology, Journal of General Virology and Virus Research. His research has resulted in over 200 scientific publications and reviews. Dr. Garcia-Sastre earned his Ph.D. at the University of Salamanca and completed his postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Dr. Palese at Mount Sinai.
